Hawke's Bay Rugby Global Academy

The Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union Academy is one of the most successful high performance rugby programmes in NZ. Brodie Retallick, Israel Dagg, Richard Buckman and Ihaia West are all products of the Hawkes Bay Rugby Academy. The Academy selects players from the age of 13 and each age group completes a year of high performance rugby development in the areas of Technical, Tactical, Strength & Conditioning, Mental Skills, Nutrition and Leadership. 

The Hawkes Bay Rugby Global Academy offers aspiring international players the same rugby experience as local Hawkes Bay Rugby players. Not only do Global Academy players receive world class rugby tuition, they experience once in a lifetime NZ experiences. 

Packages are structured for individual players, coaches and teams or clubs!

Professional Rugby Staff

Jason Shoemark: 
Global Academy Manager

Jason has played professional rugby since 1999 representing Northland, Otago and Hawkes Bay in the ITM Cup. At Super Rugby level he played for the Blues and Highlanders including four seasons with Exeter Chiefs in England who play in the English premiership and Heineken Cup competition. He retired at the end of the 2014 season and is currently working for the Hawkes Bay Rugby Union as the Talent Development Coordinator.

Joe Payton
Player Development Manager

Joe played rugby for the Otago and Highlanders Development teams’ as an openside until illness cut his career short. Following this he has worked for Marlborough and Taranaki Rugby as an RDO and coached in professionally in Italy. He was the Technical Advisor for the Samoa U20s at the 2014 JRWC. He is currently an Assistant Coach for the Hurricanes Development team and a Technical Advisor for the Magpies.

Wanda Douglas:
Mental Skills Coach 

Wanda is an Industrial-Organisational Psychologist who has specialist training in leadership, executive coaching, personnel selection, performance management, and stress/change management. Previous employment in the RNZAF and with the NZ Army as a Territorial Officer has seen her hone her skills in performance psychology and resilience, themes that feature strongly in her work with the HB Rugby Union, Sport Hawke's Bay, and recent Hurricanes age group camps.  

Karen Moore: 

Karen is a registered Dietitian and sports nutritionist.  She runs her own private practice, EnergyMap. Karen has worked with athletes in a variety of sports including swimming, netball, triathlon, running, multisport and rugby. She has previously worked in hospital and community roles covering a range of areas including Diabetes, Renal, Stroke and Surgery. Karen is also lecturer at Eastern Institute of Technology on Nutrition and Behaviour Change. Karen has been involved with Hawkes Bay Rugby since 2013 working with the ITM cup team and Academy. Karen also is the nutrition provider for the the Hurricane schools team.

Craig Philpott:
Magpies Head Coach

Craig is a qualified school teacher who has over 20 years of rugby coaching experience. Craig played 28 games for Canterbury as well as a stint for Toshiba in Japan. Following his playing career he coached a very successful Canterbury Colts team and was a technical advisor for both the Crusaders and Canterbury ITM Cup teams. He is now the head coach for the Magpies and was recently appointed the assistant coach for the NZ Under 20 team.

Danny Lee:
Magpies Assistant Coach

Danny is a former All Black, Super Rugby and ITM Cup player. Danny played over 250 first class games in NZ, not including 2 seasons for the Newport Gwent Dragons in Wales. Danny is now into his fourth season as the Magpies Assistant Coach and is also a resource coach for the NZ U20s.

Jarvy Aoake:
Rugby Development Officer

Jarvy runs the Coach Development courses for the Hawkes Bay Rugby Union. Jarvy is responsible for running RugbySmart, the NZRU coach safety and injury prevention course.  He is a World Rugby accredited coach educator and is available to assist clubs and schools to develop coaches. Hawkes Bay born and bred, Jarvy also plays for a local club and has recently debuted as a prop for the Magpies.
